“What are you doing?”
“I’m putting this taco seasoning in front of the door. Obviously.”
“Yes, I can see that, but why?”
So, powders. While they’re used frequently in hoodoo traditions, I’m primarily going to talk about them in the context of the European folk magick I’m most familiar with.
You can dust your hands with powders, lay them (discreetly) around a place of business or someone’s home (though preferably not without their permission), sprinkle them on an enemy’s footprints to be rid of them, and use them pretty much anywhere you need some easy, not-terribly-visible magick. My favorite use for them is as part of a protection setup for a home– it’s very easy to grind up a powder and sprinkle it on your windowsills and threshold, and nobody will end up trying to call security on you for dumping a suspicious-looking powder into an office lobby’s potted plant.
In this case, it’s a a very simple powder– ready-made taco seasoning. I chose this because it’s powdered, it contains the ingredients I need, and it tastes kind of like liberally salted butt jerky so I’m definitely not going to want to actually eat it. Here’s what’s inside:
- Red pepper flakes
Hot spices have a long history of use as banishing herbs. Cumin is supposed to be good for protecting doorways when sprinkled on the threshold. Salt is widely used to cleanse and purify. While using a packet of factory-made taco seasoning probably doesn’t exactly evoke the proper mental image of a witch painstakingly grinding herbs with a blessed mortar and pestle under the light of a full moon, you work with what you’ve got. Witchcraft isn’t always glamorous, and good witches make the most of what’s available to them. (Even if it came packaged in a box of stale taco shells.)
There are a bunch of traditional recipes for powders, but crafting your own isn’t terribly difficult. You need ingredients, something to powder them with, and somewhere you want to put them when you’re done. Doing so during the proper time of day, day of the week, moon phase, and sun sign is helpful, but sometimes you need some magick in a hurry (and that’s perfectly okay too).
Do you use powders? If so, how do you prefer to do so?
