Awright! I have been looking forward to today. Really, I could’ve combined yesterday and today into a single project.
I didn’t, though.
While I don’t really follow most personality-determining aspects of astrology all that much, I have to give some credit where credit’s due. From everything I’ve experienced, loving the hell out of some lemons is very much a Virgo thing.I love lemon flavored things, lemon water has brought me immeasurable relief from stomachaches, and lemon scents are one of the relatively few smells that doesn’t give me a headache. Lemons, man.
They’re also a pretty important staple ingredient for a lot of practitioners. In addition to being inexpensive and easy to come by, they’re valued for their antiseptic and antibacterial properties and high levels of vitamin C. Have a cold? Brew up a mug of hot water with honey, ginger, and lemon. Magickally, they’re associated with cleansing, purification, love, and friendship, among other things. I usually use them for cleansing, though I have busted out a lemon and a couple packets of salt for when I needed a discreet (and super cheap) uncrossing.
There are some texts out there that advocate peeling nine lemons and adding them to a bucket of wash water in order to purify a space. This always struck me as a bit silly, since
- Most varieties of lemons are an enormous pain in the ass to peel,
- You end up with nine naked lemons you have to figure out what to do with, and
- Plain water isn’t all that great for extracting things from lemon peel. You’ll get the lovely vibes, sure, but all the delicious-smelling essential oils just kind of sit there.
So, if you’re planning on messing around with lemon peels, get a zester. You won’t have to figure out a way to get through all of the spongy pith, and you won’t end up with a bunch of dried-out lemons. Zest also dries faster, so you don’t have to worry about packing a bunch of leathery skins into a coffee grinder (or worse– working them over by hand with a mortar and pestle).
Anyhow, I’m brewing up a big old pot of lemon water with the intention to cleanse and impart its delicious lemony virtues to whatever it touches. It’s not a complicated potion, but it’s a useful one for cleansing both inside and out– both me and my environment. I like using lemon water as kind of spiritual hygiene before I do full-on rituals, and it’s also good for clearing a space. The portion I don’t drink, I plan to add some blessed salt and protective herbs to and use as a surface cleaner for the counters in my kitchen– a pretty important space, considering all of mine and my S.O.’s food, brews, etc. are prepared there!
Do you do a lot of potion-making? What are your favorite recipes?
