Personal concerns are pretty much anything tied to a person’s physical body, be they clothing or discarded parts like hair. In essence, they help guide a spell to its intended target. If you wanted to send someone some healing, for example, you might use a lock of their hair. If you wanted to cast a love spell on a (consenting) person, you might pin a scrap of fabric from their undergarments to a scrap of fabric from yours. I usually use the term “taglock” when I refer to them, though other people’s idea of what constitutes a taglock may vary.
The thing is, I use personal concerns a lot. Yesterday, for example. I don’t want to skip today just because it’s something I’ve kind of been doing all along, though, and I like doing magick for other people, so I’m going to work on the only other person whose personal detritus I have access to — my S.O.
We live in a major city, and it’s not always safe. Train platforms can be crowded with pushy commuters, inattentive drivers happen, and America isn’t exactly bending over backward to ensure safety for cyclists. Today, I’m going to make a charm to help keep him safe from the million and one things that can become terrible when you’re traveling through the city.
In addition to his personal concerns, I’m going to use:
- A small piece of amber.
- Three ash leaves.
- A piece of fabric to tie them in.
I know I haven’t really mentioned it, but I do have some words I say/chant over the ingredients while I’m putting everything together. I don’t generally write them down here because, well… I don’t know what they are until they’re coming out of my mouth. From my own experience, things work better for me this way– I’m forced to speak from the heart. I also don’t expend any extra mental energy on trying to remember to say the “right” words. All of my focus is on what I’m doing. If you find you work best with a pre-written chant, that’s awesome! You’ve definitely got a better memory than I do!
I’ve made protective charms for him in the past, but this one’s travel specific. It’s fairly simple, but magick doesn’t have to be complicated– not everything you do needs to come with a long ritual and a full circle casting. This is just a small bit of magick he can keep in his wallet or the pocket of his jacket when he’s out and about.
Do you target your spells with personal concerns? What are your favorite ones to use?
