Sometimes, life sends you for a loop. You might find yourself picking up double shifts at work, recuperating from an illness, or dealing with other responsibilities that put added demands on your physical reserves. While a lot of magick can be really helpful for shifting your outlook and molding your mental circumstances, sometimes you need something with a little more octane.
That’s where this easy strength spell might help. It can be as simple or as complicated as you like, and can be easily worked into everything from a prayer to a full ritual.
Of course, though this helps give you a little boost of vitality, it isn’t a substitute for medical diagnosis, treatment, or advice. Feeling sluggish could be something as simple as a poor diet and cruddy sleep, or part of any number of dangerous medical conditions. I want you to take good care of yourself!
First, the right date and time. Every hour of the day, day of the week, and phase of the moon has its own correspondences, and (while I don’t think they’ll make or break a spell) isn’t it better to work with everything on your side? The first time I did this I chose August 2nd at around 6:30 AM, for a couple of reasons:
- It fell during a new moon, a time powerfully associated with new beginnings just before the ever-increase of the waxing moon.
- It was a Tuesday, associated with physical strength.
- It was during Leo, associated with courage.
- 6:30 AM fell between Mars and the Sun, while the hour of 6 is associated with perseverance.
- 6:30 AM is an ascending hour, meaning it is one of the hours that “counts up” to noon. These hours are good for magick that increases, much like the waxing moon.
Needless to say, this took quite a bit of planning on my part. Is all of this necessary for it to work? No, but it helps!
For the strength spell itself, you’ll need the right representations of your desire, and a piece of petrified wood. Petrified wood is a strength stone par excellence– what was once fiber has, over time, hardened into stone that still retains all of the beauty and complexity of the living wood. You can use a simple tumbled piece like one of these from GreenEarthStones, or go for something like this gorgeous pendant from sundownbeaddesigns:
For representations of strength, choose whatever resonates with you. Tarot cards like Strength or The Chariot, herbs like barley or bay, or representations of animals like bulls or lions all work– whatever lends you the right energy and gets you in the right mindset.
From there, it’s just a matter of holding the stone in your right hand and envisioning it filling with life-giving energy from the earth and sky. Feel the energy drawn into yourself, flowing down your arm and into your hand, and finally filling the petrified wood with a swirling, glittering vortex. Call upon whatever strength- and vitality-embodying deities or spirits you wish for aid with this strength spell, and ask them for their help in the days to follow.
When you feel that the charm has absorbed all the energy it can, disconnect from it and ground yourself. If this strength spell is for you, I suggest grounding using a little food and drink.
If you’ve got the right ingredients and enough time to plan ahead, I suggest trying the Elixir of Health recipe from Patricia Telesco’s Kitchen Witch’s Guide to Brews and Potions (a great, easy-to-use recipe book I highly recommend). If not, try picking up some ready-made vegetable juice and some whole grain bread. Use some as an offering to the spirits you called upon (if any) and the spirit of the stone. As you eat and drink the rest, take the time to savor it. Feel the solidity of the bread filling your stomach. Feel the vitamins in the juice offering you renewed vigor.
Give thanks, and keep the petrified wood where you can easily look at or touch it when you need a little extra boost. Be sure to get plenty of sleep, and take at least a couple minutes a day for mindful, healthy eating.
