So, I’ve started playing Starbound again.
This comes on the heels of an announcement about the re-opening of Orion’s Edge, a server that a bunch of my gaming friends play on– I figured it was high time to make some new characters and mess around for awhile.
While I’ve definitely criticized how Chucklefish (the makers of the game) have handled things in the past, I’ve gotta admit that Starbound’s latest version is pretty rad. There’re a bunch of neat additions that make playing around with the game a lot more fun and flexible than it was before, though I haven’t really dug into building much yet. Other people on Orion’s Edge have, though, and I’m really loving the results:
The premise of the game is still pretty simple: Do quests, explore planets, collect treasure, build things. Where the game really shines, for me, is it’s use as a roleplaying environment. The characters are pretty customizable, and when you throw in color customization tools like SBSE you have the ability to make pretty much anything your heart desires– and that’s even without getting into adding custom races or other objects.
Ultimately I’m a huge nerd, I like writing interactive stories with my friends, and Starbound makes for a pretty rad backdrop for that. I dunno know how much of the adventures of my characters (Fala Zaffre, space salvager/literal garbage heiress and Laeo Mazarine, interplanetary casino magnate) I’ll end up relating here, but maybe I’ll get to see you in game. What do you say?
