Since I didn’t start 31 Days of Magic on the first, I decided I’d begin with the day I started on (the fourth) and tack the days I’d missed onto the very end. Hence, this post.
Candle spells are one of the first forms of magick most witches learn. Though the exact process varies from person to person, I learned basic candle magick as picking the appropriate color and shape of candle, inscribing it with symbols or sigils relating to your need, charging it, anointing it with oils or other fluids, and burning it. Most people start with chime candles (those small, sort-of-taper-looking candles that are about 4″ by 1/2″) because they can burn down completely in a relatively short period of time. There are fancier candles, including ones with knobs, multiple colors, and even those shaped like animals or people, all of which have their own purposes.
Since today is the first of the month (rabbits rabbits rabbits!) as well as the new moon**, I’m going to do the simple little new moon spell I usually do– write a list of things I’d like to see increase with the waxing of the moon, and tuck it under a flat-bottomed quartz point I have just for this purpose. Since this is a short, simple spell that relies chiefly on the proper phase of the moon, it would fit pretty easily into the structure of a candle spell for manifestation.
I’m not going to use a chime candle this time around. Instead, I’ve got a loaded tea light. It’s chock-full of a secret blend of power herbs, and I’ve used another crystal to inscribe symbols of what I want across the top of the wax. It won’t take long to burn down, so, after empowering, I’m going to set it beside my petition and crystal and let it lend its power to the work.
That’s really all there is to it!
Do you do a lot of candle spells? What’s your favorite method?
** In witchcraft, a “new moon” is a little different from the astronomical new moon. Generally, the moon is considered a “new moon” when it is completely dark. For many witches, this time is actually called the “dark moon” and the new moon occurs when the moon first begins waxing again.
