This should probably be a space where I put my resolutions for 2015, but I’ve never been that good at making or keeping them this time of year.
Honestly, it’s rough to make a bunch of decisions to turn your life around, then wake up with it still being January.
I usually save them for summer. I may still fail at keeping most of them, but at least it’s warm and sunny when I do.
I started this year at 109 pounds, on two grams of Diamox, and barely able to do more than sleep. Since then, I’ve gained weight, lowered my dosage to a quarter of what it was. I’ve even explored a bit of Mare Island, camped in the mountains, and poked around other areas of California I never thought I’d be able to experience. I’ve met amazing people, completed projects that I’m proud of, and am bubbling with new ideas for my blog and my art. I have goals to pursue: getting myself into a more long-term living situation, buying a camera, having more prints made, expanding my shop, and working on my social media presence. It’s going to take work, money, and quite a bit of learning, but I’m confident I can realize them by the summer solstice.
I’m not completely out of the woods yet regarding my fight with intracranial hypertension, and I’m coming to terms with the fact that I likely never will be. With all the improvement I’ve shown, there are still spots of vision loss that are probably permanent. Even if I go into remission, I can still relapse. That’s okay. Other people have gone through a worse battle than I have, and they’ve come through with their spirits intact. I can do this. If you’re going through this, you can too. It’s completely okay to feel like you can’t sometimes; I have, and I owe much of my current happiness to the people around me that cared enough to bring me out of that… Even if some of those people were anonymous helpers on crisis lines.
For the witchy ones among us, the new year is the perfect time for new beginnings. This can mean a simple re-dedication ceremony, magick to shed any negativity or malevolent influences left over from the previous year, spells to aid you in keeping your resolutions, or just spells to open new doors in your life. The Ways of a Witch has a great candle spell for new beginnings, as does Spirit Stitch. The moon’s waxing gibbous right now, but it won’t be long before it’s the perfect time to bust out new moon magick for renewal and spiritual growth. If you’re new to the craft, now is the perfect time to gift yourself a resource like Earth Power: Techniques of Natural Magic, a simple, plain-English book of methods for using the most basic tools you have around you– rain, leaves, soil– to effect change.
I’d also like to promote more independent crafters and artists here. I’m fortunate in that much of what I have and use is either bespoke, one-of-a-kind, or handmade by people with a genuine love for what they do. Do you have resolutions for this year? Are you taking your blog, your shop, or your crafts in a new direction? Do you work with a charitable cause that could use some love to start 2015 off right? Give yourself a shout out in the comments section, I’d love to see them.
Happy New Year!
